Provinces of Indonesia

Provinces of Indonesia are the 38 largest subdivisions of the Indonesia and the highest tier of the local government (formerly called first-level region provinces or provinsi daerah tingkat I). Provinces are further divided into regencies and cities (formerly called second-level region regencies and cities or kabupaten/kotamadya daerah tingkat II), which are in turn subdivided into districts (kecamatan).

Each province has a local government, headed by a governor, and a legislative body. The governor and members of local representative bodies are elected by popular vote for five-year terms.

Indonesian territory is divided into 38 provinces, which are also grouped into 3 time zones. There are 18 Provinces that are included in the Western Indonesia Time Zone – WIB (Waktu Indonesia bagian Barat), 12 Provinces that are included in the Central Indonesia Time Zone – WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah), and 8 Provinces that are included in the Eastern Indonesia Time Zone – WIT (Waktu Indonesia bagian Timur).

WIB

WIB (Waktu Indonesia bagian Barat) – Western Indonesia Time Zone. (UTC+7)
There are 18 Provinces that are included in the Western Indonesia Time Zone – WIB (Waktu Indonesia bagian Barat): Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, Banten, West Java, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan.


WITA

WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah) – Central Indonesia Time Zone. (UTC+8)

There are 12 Provinces that are included in the Central Indonesia Time Zone – WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah): Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and North Sulawesi.


WIT

WIT (Waktu Indonesia bagian Timur) – Eastern Indonesia Time Zone. (UTC+9)
There are 8 Provinces that are included in the Eastern Indonesia Time Zone – WITA (Waktu Indonesia bagian Timur): Maluku, North Maluku, West Papua, Papua, and 3 new Provinces (based on -UU Daerah Otonomi Baru (DOB), 2022); South Papua, Central Papua, and Highlands Papua. The newest Province is Papua Barat-Daya, South-West Papua.

Subdivisions of Indonesia

Indonesia is divided into Province (Indonesian: Provinsi). Provinces are made up of regencies (kabupaten) and cities (kota).

Regencies and cities are divided into districts (variations of terms). Districts are divided into Kelurahan or Desa.
