There are 1,340 recognised ethnic groups in Indonesia. The vast majority of those belong to the Austronesian peoples.
Based on ethnic classification, the largest ethnic group in Indonesia is the Javanese who make up about 40% of the total population. The Javanese are concentrated on the island of Java, but millions have migrated to other islands throughout the archipelago because of the transmigration program. The Sundanese are the next largest group, they live on the island of Java in the west, with the Javanese in the middle and east.
Batak, Madurese, Betawi, Minangkabau, Buginese, and Melayu/Malay are the next largest groups in the country. Many ethnic groups, particularly in Kalimantan and Papua, have only hundreds of members. Most of the local languages belong to the Austronesian language family, although a significant number of people, particularly in eastern Indonesia, speak unrelated Papuan languages.
There are ethnics who come from outside the territory of Indonesia, which since before the existence of the Indonesian state, have long lived, mixed, and some even married with local ethnicities, and have children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and subsequent descendants in various regions in Indonesia, namely; Tionghoa, Arab, and India.
Aceh

Alas, Arab,
Devayan Tribe,
Gayo tribe,
Haloban tribe,
Kluet Tribe,
Lekon tribe,
Pakpak tribe,
Sigulai trbe,
Singkil tribe,
Tamiang Tribe, and Aneuk Jamee tribe which is a descendant of the Minangkabau tribe, which has long inhabited Aceh Province.
North Sumatra
Ethnic groups inhabit North Sumatra Province.
The following list is a list of indigenous ethnic groups that have been recorded and whose whereabouts are known, namely: Batak tribe,
Minangkabau tribe, Malay tribe,
Nias Tribe,
Acehnese,
India,
Tionghoa, and
Arab. Of the various tribes mentioned above, each consists of several sub-tribes, and even sub-sub tribes.
For example, the Batak tribe consists of several sub-tribes; Angkola tribe
Karo Tribe,
Mandailing Tribe,
Pakpak Tribe,
Simalungun Tribe, and
Toba Tribe. And the Pakpak sub-tribe, consisting of several sub-sub tribes; Pakpak Suak Boang, Pakpak Suak Classen, Pakpak Suak Keppas,
Pakpak Suak Pegagan, and Pakpak Suak Simsim. The Malay tribe consists of sub-tribes;
Malay Deli,
Langkat Malay, and
Serdang Malay.
West Sumatra

There are 4 (four) main indigenous ethnic groups that inhabit West Sumatra Province. The following list is a list of indigenous ethnic groups that have been recorded and whose whereabouts are known, namely:Â Malay tribe, Minangkabau tribe,
Mentawai Tribe and Caniago Tribe.
Jambi
Ethnic groups inhabit Jambi Province.
There are 6 (six) tribes and sub triber indigenous ethnic groups that inhabit Jambi Province. The following list is a list of indigenous ethnic groups that have been recorded and whose whereabouts are known, namely:Â Tribe of Anak Dalam Batin Sembilan, Kerinci tribe,
Jambi tribe,
Inner Tribe,
Duano tribe, and
Minangkabau tribe.
The Anak Dalam Batin Sembilan tribe is a sub-tribe of Anak Dalam originating from Jambi Province. Whereas; Jambi Tribe, Batin Tribe, and Duano Tribe, are 3 (three) sub-tribes of Malay Tribe, which are originating from the Jambi Province.
Riau

There are 4 (four) main indigenous ethnic groups that inhabit Riau Province. The following list is a list of indigenous ethnic groups that have been recorded and whose whereabouts are known, namely:Â Malay Tribe,
Sakai Tribe,
Talang Mamak Tribe, and Minangkabau Tribe.
Kepulauan Riau

There are 10 (ten) ethnic groups, Tribes and Sub-Tribes, that inhabit Kepulauan Riau Province. The following list is a list of indigenous ethnic groups that have been recorded and whose whereabouts are known, namely:Â Malay Tribe, Barok People, Mantang People, Nanga People,
Posik People (Pusek/Persik),
Sebarok People, Sengkarak People, Tambus People,
Teluk Nipah People, and Tionghoa.

Teluk Nipah People, are the sub tribes of Laut Tribe who still survive and live in Riau Islands. And there are 4 (four) Tionghoa sub tribes inhabit Kepulauan Riau Province; Hokkian,
Hakka,
Tiochiu, and
Hainan.
South Sumatra & Bangka Belitung

There are 28 (twenty eight)Â ethnic groups inhabit South Sumatra Province and Bangka Belitung Province. The following list is a list of indigenous ethnic groups that have been recorded and whose whereabouts are known, namely: Ameng Sewang, Anak Dalam, Daya, Musi, Ogan, Enim, Kayu Agung, Kikim, Kisam, Komering, Lahat, Lematang, Lintang, Malay, Pasemah, Padamaran, Rambang Senuling, Lom, Mapur, Meranjat, Ranau, Rawas, Saling, Sekak, Semendo, Pegagan, Penesak, and Pemulutan.
