Batang Gadis, derived from the name of the main river, is a national park located at 99° 12’ 45″ East Longitude to 99° 47’ 10″ and 0° 27’ 15″ to 1° 01’ 57″ North Latitude, in Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra, based on the Decree of the Minister of Forestry No.126/Kpts-II/2004, April 29, 2004. The habitat of this national park occupies a diverse ecosystem ranging from highland swamp forests, wetlands, river valleys, limestone forests, lowland hill forests to mountain forests, with the highest point being the peak of Mount Sorik Marapi. The purpose of establishing the national park is to save wildlife and natural habitats, and also as a symbol of recognition of local wisdom values ​​in managing forests. The high potential diversity of flora and fauna makes it a habitat for several protected animals such as the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), tapir (Tapirus indicus), sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), siamang (Hylobates syndactylus), ungko (Hylobates closii), wild goat (Naemorhedus sumatrae), deer (Cervus unicolor), barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak), golden cat (Catopuma temminckii), porcupine (Hystrix brachyura), clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), as well as various types of birds, amphibians, and reptiles.
